DO ANIMALS GO TO HEAVEN?
As a Spiritualist, a question I am frequently asked by non-spiritualists is “Do animals go to heaven?” I want to say YES, YES, YES! The reason offered for animals not going to heaven is that they do not have souls. It is claimed that they have bodies but not souls. This is something I do not understand. Have I got a soul? If so where is it? It is not something that can be seen even with an x-ray! According to the dictionary your soul is the part of you that consists of your mind, character, thoughts and feelings. Well surely animals have all of these and anyone who has ever loved a pet would agree. Don’t ask me to believe that Jesus, as a little boy growing up in Nazareth, never had a pet. I am sure He played with a dog, stroked a cat, delighted in newly born kittens and other animal lives, and asked His Mum for crumbs to feed the birds! Remember that as an adult He Himself told us “Not a sparrow falls to the ground (i.e. dies) but God knows about it.” [Matt 10:29}
Our religious leaders tell us that animals do not know about sin and repentance and therefore cannot go to heaven. Well neither do new born babies who die within an hour of their birth, nor children who die young and what about the mentally handicapped, the deranged? Are they all to be denied God’s Kingdom? As a Spiritualist I know that everyone on death enters into the next world and that the part of the next world they will go to depends on the life they have led while on earth. Animals in their life exhibit love, courage and bravery not only for their own kind but also for their human companions. We have all read of animals being awarded medals for their acts of bravery and many sacrifice their own lives to save their young. Then there is the story of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier, who slept on his master’s grave every night for 14 years. Does anyone honestly believe that a loving God would not reunite Bobby with his beloved master when he died?
Animal survival has been proved many times during clairvoyant demonstrations. Here are some I have personally witnessed. A girl in the audience receiving a message from her father was told by the medium that her father was surrounded by birds. Oh yes, was the reply, my father loved cage birds and kept them all his life. “Well,” said the medium “ they are still with him.” Another girl receiving a message about a friend recently deceased was told that her friend was working with cats in the next world. On hearing this she confirmed that her friend had worked for the CPL (Cats Protection League) while alive. In my book I recount the amazing story of a monkey who made contact through the medium to a gentleman in the audience who confirmed that he knew the monkey having worked overseas. So you see even “wild” animals come back to greet humans they have known. God also knows everything that happens to His animal family. A colleague of mine was engaged to a veterinary surgeon. While enjoying a drive out in the country they noticed a bird fluttering at the side of the road in great distress. Stopping the car my colleague’s fiancée got out to see what was wrong and discovered that the bird had dislocated its wing. With a couple of clicks of his skilful trained fingers he sorted the problem and the bird was able to fly away. Only God could arrange that a vet be driving along that road at that time.
So who will look after your pet in the next world until you join them? Well if there are already family members there the pet will go and stay with them. However for strays and those with no family there are many animal lovers in the next world who will care for them. Our beloved guide Silver Birch has told us of animal survival. He says that there is individual survival for domestic animals that have had association with humans and that all the animals associated with you will be there to greet you when you arrive. [To see a list of books, articles and further information about pets in heaven go to Google and type “True Stories of Pets in Heaven.” ] Wild animals who have not had this human experience will go back to join their group soul.
As Spiritualists we know that love is the strongest link there is. Death cannot separate us from those we love. I hope that what I have written will bring comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a beloved animal friend.
“What sort of Heaven would Heaven be without my pets there to welcome me?”
